Tying shoes isn’t something that comes naturally. It’s a lot of hard work for both the kids learning to tie their shoes, and the parents who are trying to teach them. We’ve been teaching my oldest for a while now, she hasn’t caught on totally yet, and I really don’t have the patients to keep trying, me and my husband try to teach her two different ways, his is easier than mine so we’ve been trying to stick to it, but it’s still not moving as fast as I’d like it to.
When I heard about Tie Buddies I was anxious to try them, maybe this would be something that would finally help her out, and help my patients out as well. Tie Buddies were invented by a mother (Wendy Welling) in 2007 while she was trying to come up with a way to assist her kids in tying their shoes all by themselves. Tie Buddies are a small plastic ‘pull tab’ that attach to your shoe lace and claim to take the ‘messy loops’ out of the equation of tying shoes as well as eliminating the confusion of multiple ‘holes’ where the laces can pass through.
I admit, seeing Tie Buddies for the first time I was a little skeptical, and when we tried to place them on my daughters laces, they wouldn’t fit on her new pair of shoes, so to try them out we tried on her older pair and thankfully those laces fit through. So my first observation is that Tie Buddies are not good if you have thicker/larger laces on shoes.
First step is to put the tie buddies on the laces, and then just follow the instructions. Which we found confusing honestly, there is a demonstration of how to use Tie Buddies on their website which could help a little.
My oldest was pretty excited to use these and learn yet another way to tie her shoes. I was pretty excited too, as hopefully these could help. But we were wrong. Tie Buddies confused her even more than the ways we taught her and she was even more frustrated in no time. Tie Buddies in my opinion, aren’t something that we’ll be using. The method that tie buddies use to teach children how to tie their shoes isn’t practical, once they take the tie buddies off, they’re back to square one, learning a proper way to tie them again.
It could be good for younger kids who want to just do it on their own without learning the proper way to tie shoes yet, but for older kids trying to learn how to properly tie their shoes, I’d give a pass on Tie Buddies.
