It's been a long time coming...

I’ve put it off and put it off and tried to wiggle my way out of it, but the time has finally come for me to *gulp* drive!

Yes you read that right, I’m 31 years old and I don’t have a driver’s license! It’s not that I don’t know how to drive, I know how to, I’ve had a driver’s license in the past, but it was a Canadian one. Here’s the thing, when I moved to the United States I first lived in Indiana. Indiana would not take a valid Canadian License as proof of driving record, so I would have to start all over again with a learner’s permit. I decided to just drive on my Canadian license until it expired, which was almost 6 years ago now, and I just never bothered with going to do my written test.

I do have a slight fear of driving especially since having children. I get very anxious in a car, driving or not. You see in 99 I got into a really bad car accident that destroyed my car, ever since then I’ve had a slight fear, but it never really came into play until I had children. I am so cautious when other people are driving and my kids are in the car, I fear the worst, and I fear that since I’ve been in a bad accident that it could happen again with the kids in the car, so I’ve held off and held off for the past 6 years on driving.

It’s not making hubby happy, or anyone else for that matter since I can never go anywhere, I can’t do what I want, I can’t see friends when I want, I even have to wait for my hubby just to get groceries or pet supplies and I'm really starting to hate that. With Lyric starting school I realized it’s time, I have to get back into the car and drive. Although we walk to school, what in the world am I going to do when it’s a bad storm or something, I can’t drag out my youngest and continue to walk.

So, today is the day. I just got out of the shower, getting ready to head out the door, with my Digest of Ohio Motor Vehicle Laws in hands to read on the way, and I’m going to finally take that step and go get that written test done.

Time will only tell when I’ll do the actual driving portion of the test, I really have to get used to driving again, and driving in the US scares the crap out of me, I admit drivers are much more aggressive here than back home, although I used to drive in Toronto all the time with no worries about it, but then again those were my single days when I didn’t have other’s to worry about.

Wish me luck! Hopefully I’ll do the driving test sooner rather than later as well, but hey, this is a step!

I wish you all the luck in the world...truly.
I am forty and never learned how to drive. At first it was because I wanted to be hip and cool and alternative and rebellious. I walked everywhere, and took the bus or a taxi when I didn't feel like walking (which was rare). But now, if I am honest with myself, I realize that I don't drive out of fear. I have three kids under the age of four, and I keep imagining that I will be in a crash (my fault, of course)and I will injure or kill of my kids. I feel trapped in this fear, so I wish you success so that I,too, may have hope.

I remember you mentioning this some time ago and I forgot all about it. I'm proud of you for taking that step. I've been without transportation for about two weeks and it's driving me absolutely batty not to be able to come and go as needed. Trying to figure out how to get one of my children to their school and keeping the little one with me all the time.

I'm sure you did well on the written test and you'll do just as good on the driving portion. Go forth and conquer! ;)

Good luck to you.

I was in a car accident quite a few years ago myself and I know about that little fear every time we get back in a vehicle.

I wish you all the best and think it is great you made this big decision.
